Colorado is a state in the western United States. Colorado is best known as the home of the highest peaks of the Rocky Mountains, which dominate the western half of the state; eastern Colorado is largely plains. The state capital and largest city is Denver, Colorado; the Denver metropolitan area contains over half of the state's population (2.5 million out of 4.3 million). The state is named for the Colorado River, which takes its name from the Spanish word colorado which means reddish color.

East of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains are the Colorado Eastern Plains, the section of the Great Plains within Colorado at elevations ranging from 3500 to 7000 ft (1,000 to 2,000 m). Kansas and Nebraska border Colorado to the east. The plains are sparsely settled with most population along the South Platte and the Arkansas rivers and the I-70 corridor. Rainfall is meager, averaging about 15 in/year (380 mm/year). There is some irrigated farming, but much of the land is used for dryland farming or ranching. The major cities and towns lie just east of the Front Range, in the I-25 corridor. The majority of the population of Colorado lives in this densely urbanized strip. To the west lies the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains with notable peaks such as Long's Peak, Mount Evans, Pike's Peak, and the Spanish Peaks near Walsenburg in the south. This area drains to the east, is forested, and is partially urbanized.

Colorado is a diverse region of mountains, plateaus, canyons and plains. Generally, the eastern half of the state has flat, high plains and rolling prairies gradually rising westward to the foothills of the front range. West of the high peaks of the front range are three natural parks that lead from the north to the south and are named North Park, Middle Park and South Park. The western spine of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado contains the Continental Divide, which runs from north to south through west-central Colorado and bisects the state's watersheds. The western half of the state consists of alpine terrain interspersed with wide valleys, rugged canyons, high plateaus and deep basins.

  • Colorado is known for its famous Rocky Mountains and is a year-round destination that boasts spectacular national parks, forests, gold-rush ghost towns and Native American ruins. The capital, Denver, is the gateway to numerous ski resorts and is home to many museums, parks, gardens and a restored Victorian square. State attractions include Colorado Springs, Pikes Peak Ghost Town, the Rocky Mountain, Black Canyon of the Gunnison and Mesa Verde national parks, the sandstone formations of the Garden of the Gods, and Aspen, Vail and Breckenridge ski resorts.

There are numerous and varied recreation opportunities throughout Colorado. The world class resorts of Aspen, Vail and Telluride are among the better known ski areas. Cross-country skiers and snowshoers enjoy the solitude of snow shrouded pine forests and can make use of several huts systems for backcountry adventuring. Snowmobilers ply what are four-wheel drive roads in the summer, often with a skier or two in tow. Crisp white snow contrasts with deep blue skies to create the perfect winter playground.
