Connecticut is a state of the United States, part of the New England region, as well as the southernmost state in New England and one of the wealthiest states in the country. Connecticut was one of the thirteen colonies that revolted against British rule in the American Revolution. The name Connecticut comes from an Algonquin Indian word meaning on the long tidal river. The first Europeans to settle permanently in Connecticut were English Puritans from Massachusetts in 1633.

Connecticut is bordered on the south by Long Island Sound, on the west by New York State, on the north by Massachusetts, and on the east by Rhode Island. The state capital is Hartford, and the other major cities include New Haven, New London, Norwich, Stamford, Waterbury, Torrington and Bridgeport. In all, there are a total of 169 incorporated towns in Connecticut. There is an ongoing civic pride and economic competition between Hartford and New Haven, which stems back to the days when the two cities shared the state's capital, and even back to when New Haven and Hartford were two separate colonies. The Connecticut River cuts through the center of the state, flowing into Long Island Sound, Connecticut's outlet to the Atlantic Ocean.

  • Connecticut is a mixture of town and country; beyond the towns and major cities inhabited by New York commuters are quiet colonial villages set in a rural landscape. The third-smallest State in the USA, Connecticut has a rich literary history. Hartford was the home of Mark Twain, and tourists can visit The Mark Twain House, at Nook Farm, where he wrote his greatest work, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, in 1884. Next door is the cottage in which the author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Harriet Beecher Stowe, lived until her death in 1896, also open for tours.

For children, there is the delightful Bushnell Park Carousel, which was built in 1914 in one of the first public US parks. Other Hartford attractions include the oldest public art museum in the country, Wadsworth Atheneum, the Museum of Connecticut History, and the Old State House, which housed the State government until 1914. New Haven is the site of Yale University, the Peabody Museum of Natural History, the Center for British Art, and Yale University Art Gallery.

With so many miles of shoreline, Connecticut is a haven for water-sport enthusiasts. The states many public beaches and marinas provide access to swimming, sailing, fishing and kayaking. The extensive state park and forest system in Connecticut supports facilities for camping, picnicking and hiking.
