Florida is a southern state in the United States. It is known as the Sunshine State. Spaniards first arrived in 1513 and laid claim to a large, imprecisely defined area extending from about modern day Gainesville northward to the Carolinas, which they called La terra florida, The flowery land. Over the following century, the Spanish and French both established settlements in Florida, with varying degrees of success. The area of Florida diminished with the establishment of British colonies to the north and French colonies to the west. Control of parts of Florida passed among Spanish, British, and American control. Spain finally ceded Florida to the United States with the Adams-Onís Treaty in 1819, in exchange for the US renouncing any claims on Texas. On March 3, 1845, Florida became the 27th state of the United States of America.

The climate of Florida is tempered somewhat by its proximity to water. Most of the state has a humid subtropical climate with the extreme tip of Florida and the Florida Keys bordering on a true tropical climate. The seasons in Florida often called Hot and Hotter are actually determined more by precipitation than by temperature with warm, relatively dry winters and autumns (the dry season) and hot, wet springs and especially the summers (the wet season). The Gulf stream has a moderating effect on Florida climate and although it is common for much of Florida to see a high summer temperature over 90 degrees Farenheit, it is not common for the mercury to go above 100 degrees Fareinheit in Florida.

Nicknamed the Sunshine State, Florida is one of the leading tourist states featuring ocean breezes, swaying palm trees, fabulous wildlife and world famous resorts. Discovered in 1513 by Spanish explorer Juan Ponce De Leon, Spaniards established America's oldest city, St. Augustine. Today, this northeastern town, with its surrounding fortifications, is one of Florida's most visited areas. Sandy soils, rich swamplands, huge limestone beds and thick cypress forests are home to some of America's most spectacular birdlife, plant life, and wildlife. Floridian's have capitalized on this extraordinary feature creating scenic drives, observation platforms, and boardwalks easily accessible to all ages and abilities.

  • Florida is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, with visitors heading to ‘The Sunshine State’ in search of fun, sun and thrills. Walt Disney World, Magic Kingdom Park and Busch Gardens are just a few of the man-made attractions for which the State is famed. But there is more to Florida than Mickey Mouse and white-knuckle rides. Winding waterways, freshwater lakes, hills, forests, exciting cities, 13,560km (8426 miles) of coast, countless bays, inlets and islands, and a legendary climate make this one of the most popular States in the USA. Florida is divided into eight geographical regions: Northwest; North Central; Northeast; Central West; Central; Central East; Southwest; and Southeast Florida & the Keys.

Recreation in Florida is focused upon water. The coastline alone provides endless opportunities for boating, water-skiing, swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, wind surfing, etc. The inland regions provide canoe trails, wildlife viewing and fishing opportunities on lakes, rivers and wetlands. The Florida National Scenic Trail provides a facility for long distance hiking that extends throughout the state.
