Tucked between Pennsylvania, to the west, and New York, to the north and east, New Jersey occupies a small parcel of land along the Atlantic Ocean. Central eastern and southern regions of the state boast many barrier islands with wide, white sand beaches and towns that range from quiet villages to rowdy resorts. The Garden State Parkway provides access to the coastal regions of the state as it leads from north to south. The Delaware River forms the state's western border with Pennsylvania.

The southern reaches of the Delaware River Valley contain large parcels of natural areas in the interior of the state. Several wildlife management areas exist in southern New Jersey, as well as Belleplain, Wharton, Bass River and Lebanon State Forests. This area encompasses the rugged Pine Barrens region, that draws nature lovers from neighboring states. This is the least populated area of the state.
